Installation of the Extension Pole for the PAX A80 Terminal

Installation of the Extension Pole for the PAX A80 Terminal

Overview

This document explains how to install the extension pole for use with the PAX A80 terminal, intended for use with drive-through restaurants. The extension pole provides additional reach to the server, as well as securely fastening the payment terminal to prevent any accidental cable disconnections.

What’s Included

The extension pole kit includes the following components:
  1. 24-inch aluminum pole with a rubber handle
  2. Terminal support platform
  3. Retractable extension cable (20 to 72 inches)
  4. Ethernet and power supply junction box with green LED
  5. Terminal wall bracket
The extension pole and junction box come pre-assembled and ready to connect to your network. You need only to secure the junction box and wall bracket by the drive-through window and connect the payment terminal to the pole’s support platform.

What You Need

The extension pole kit includes the hardware required to secure the terminal to the pole, but there are additional supplies you must provide to complete the installation. These supplies include:
  1. Drill with a 1/8” drill bit
  2. #1 Philips head screwdriver
  3. At least 4 #10 (5mm) wood or metal screws, minimum 1” (2.5cm) length
  4. Stud finder (optional)
  5. Plank of wood, minimum 16 inches wide by 4 inches high, and 1 inch thick (optional)

Typical Installation

The following image shows a typical installation of the extension pole and wall bracket:

NOTE: The junction box and wall bracket can be installed closer if your situation permits.
IMPORTANT: Before you begin, make sure the terminal is unplugged from its AC power source.

Securing the Terminal to the Platform

The support platform for the terminal integrates with the design of the back of the A80 terminal to securely fasten the terminal to the pole.
To secure the terminal to the pole platform:
  1. Turn the extension pole over so the handle is on your right side.
  2. At the bottom of the platform, there are two screws below the pole.

  3. Loosen both screws enough to slide them to the top of their guides.

  4. Tighten the screws just enough to keep them in the raised position.
  5. Turn the extension pole over and connect the AC connector to the terminal’s POWER port and the Ethernet connector to the LAN port.

  6. On the back of the terminal, in the center at the top, there is a notched guide that accepts the platform’s matching guide. Pair these guides and slide the platform and the terminal together.

  7. Keeping the top of the terminal secured to the platform, push the bottom of the terminal against the platform.
  8. Using your Philips head screwdriver, loosen the screws below the pole and slide them down into the opening at the bottom of the terminal.
  9. When the screws can no longer move down, tighten them securely into place.
NOTE: You do not need to overtighten the screws; just tight enough to keep the terminal attached to the platform.

Support Bracket and Junction Box Installation

This section explains how to install the terminal wall bracket (for when the terminal is not in use by a customer) and the junction box that houses the terminal’s AC power and Ethernet connections.

Important Installation Considerations

Due to the frequency at which the extension pole will be removed from the wall bracket, passed to customers, and put back, as well as the possible over-extension of the retractable cable, it is important to ensure that the pole’s supporting hardware is securely fastened inside the restaurant, near the drive-through window. To ensure they are securely fastened:
  1. When installing the wall bracket and the junction box, we strongly recommend that you attach them to either the window frame or ensure that they are securely attached into an adjacent wall stud.
  2. Over time, the extension pole and its cable can put the wall bracket and junction box at risk of removal from the wall when using only drywall anchors.
  3. If the window frame or a wall stud are not options, we suggest securing a piece of wood between two studs nearest the drive-through window (as shown in the following illustration) and attaching the wall bracket and junction box to that piece of wood to provide the most secure connection inside the restaurant.

Install the Wall Bracket

The wall bracket has both VESA 75x75 and 100x100 four-hole attachment interfaces, as well as three holes in the middle for installation directly into a stud.
To install the wall bracket:
  1. Position the bracket at least 4 feet (120cm) from the floor and make a mark to indicate the desired location of the wall bracket.
  2. If securing the bracket to a wall stud, use a stud finder to locate the center the stud and align and mark the bracket’s center holes to that center line.
If securing the bracket to a plank of wood bridging two studs, make a mark using any of the bracket’s holes to identify the desired installation position.

  3. Using the 1/8” drill bit, drill pilot holes on the marks.
  4. Position the bracket over the pilot holes and secure the #10 screws into the wall (or wood) using the appropriate screwdriver head.

Install the Junction Box

The junction box has only two mounting holes, and you can mount the junction box with the screws positioned horizontally or vertically depending on where the power and Ethernet cables are located.
To install the junction box:
  1. Position the junction box as close to the drive-through window as possible and use the mounting holes to make a mark indicating the desired location.
  2. If securing the box to a wall stud, use a stud finder to locate the center the stud and align and mark the junction box’s holes to that center line.
If securing the box to a plank of wood bridging two studs, make a mark using the box’s holes to identify the desired installation position.

  3. Using the 1/8” drill bit, drill pilot holes on the marks.
  4. Position the junction box over the pilot holes and secure the #10 screws into the wall (or wood) using the appropriate screwdriver head.

Connect the Junction Box

After the junction box is securely fastened to the wall or window frame, it is time to connect the Ethernet and power cables to power the terminal.
To connect the junction box to the terminal:
  1. Using a #1 Philips head screwdriver, remove the 4 screws from the face of the junction box and set them aside.
IMPORTANT: Note the position of the LED indicator on the face of the junction box; you will need to ensure it is in the same position when you close the junction box at the end of this procedure.
  2. Remove the face of the junction box.
  3. Using the opening beside the cable that connects to the extension pole, insert the terminal’s AC power cord and your network’s Ethernet cable into the junction box.
NOTE: For the most secure connection possible, make sure to pas them through the pre-installed cable tie.
  4. Connect the Ethernet cable and power cord connector to the appropriate ports, as shown below:

  5. When the cables are firmly installed and seated, tighten the cable tie to secure the cables inside the junction box.
  6. Position the face of the junction box so the transparent rod is over the LED inside the junction box.

  7. Reinstall the 4 screws you removed in step 1 to close the junction box.
  8. Plug the terminal’s AC power adapter into an outlet. The terminal powers on and the junction box LED lights up.

Your terminal is securely fastened to the extension pole and ready to serve your drive-through customers.
